Recipes: Newest entrant in the Rich Snippet Format

Google has officially announced the introduction of recipe as the newest entrant in rich snippet format. It is a unique concept, wherein some quick and relevant facts with figures are displayed along with the search results. This helps the users who are searching the web for information, as the desired and anticipated results are directly shown with the website address and link.

For example, if a user is searching for the recipe of Thai Mango Salad, then the rich snippet format will promptly display ratings given to this recipe, total cook time and a picture of the dish along with the search results.

Prior to the introduction of recipe as the rich snippet format, Google had people, event, review and video as similar rich snippet formats. The rich snippet format has certainly assisted the users of Google to quickly scan through the contents and decide whether that particular information is really useful or not.

In order to make a particular website as rich snippet format compatible, the webmasters need to mark up their existing structured HTML content with either of these formats: microdata, RDFa, or the hRecipe microformat. Next time as Google crawls through that website, the rich snippet format will be displayed along with the search results.

It is also appropriate to mention that Google does not guarantee the website will be displayed with rich snippet format once the HTML code has been marked up. This change in the HTML code still needs some time to be recognized by Google, however, it is advisable to start early.
