How To Configure If Modified Since On Dynamic Web Pages

If Modified Since is a request header field, which is utilized to store the date of last modification. Thus, it can be a really helpful information for any search engine crawler to inform that whether there has been any content update or not?

In case the website has dynamic content in webpages, wherein the content is database centric, and is updated or deleted by the users. Such data base driven dynamic pages have very fast changing content. However, it may be not possible to update the file stamp or the If Modified Since header field. What will happen in that case? Whether Google bots be able to index that page?

Google always recommend that whenever the content is updated, the user should always update the header field. By doing so, the crawlers or the bots will be able to know that the content has indeed changed, and now its time to index the webpage. In case the header file is not updated, the Google bots will not be notified regarding any such change.

In case the content is changing dynamically, then in the worst case, the webmaster can remove the If Modified Since header information. By doing so, the Google bots will scan the content on every visit. Thus, even if the content is somewhat modified or not modified at all, the Google bots will scan the entire content, and then accordingly update the web-page.

To update the  If Modified Since header information on every occasion of any modification is the best way to configure this field. However, in the worst case scenario, this header information can also be removed.
