How Does Google Treat Addon Domains

Addon domains are sub-domain with similar names, hosted under a common hosting account. Such addon domain names usually point towards the main domain, which contains the unique and related content for that particular niche. However, there is a growing speculation among the webmasters community regarding Google's treatment for such multiple addon domains. The primary concern which arises is whether Google penalizes or spams such website where several addon domain names exist, all redirecting or presenting themselves in the main website.

Addon domains are primarily bought under a combined package, when purchasing from a domain seller. Thus, in case you are purchasing ABC.com, then the domain seller may wish to sell you different varieties of your primary domain like ABC.net or ABC.org. This happens as any natural surfer will associate all such varieties and forms of a particular domain as the same. Thus, it is very common for webmasters to purchase several addon domains and then host them in the same hosting account. There is absolutely no harm in that, atleast from Google's side.

However, the problem arises when someone uses buys a ton of such addon domains, and place them within their website. Their intention of doing so is to create backlinks for their website, and make them rank higher in the search engine. This definitely is a big no from Google. If addon domains are just created to increase backlinks by redirecting them to the same webpage, then Google may treat that particular website as spam and even penalty them.

As per Google, addon domains having small variations like a hyphen or typos which redirect to the same website are considered to be legitimate. In fact, even Google has several addon domains which are little variations like Gogle.com, which ultimately redirects to Google.com. However, if there is a website having tons and tons of addon domains on a single website, each redirecting to the main website, then this can create a negative impression on any user as well as Google.

Such unnecessary addon domains on a particular website with lot of keywords stuffing will directly imply that the webmaster is creating artificial backlinks to increase SEO ranking. Thus, it is better to utilize the addon domains option to redirect small variations of the main domain, and 'assist' the users to visit the related website.
