How Does Google Determine Domain Age?

One theory states that Google calculates the age of the domain from WhoIs data. However, this is not the case every time.

According to Matt Cutts, the WhoIs data is normally not available with the registrars which make it difficult to trace. Thus, the caching history becomes the most natural solution to fix the domain age.

It is recommended that webmasters first establish the website and display a simple page which informs all visitors that development work is underway. Meanwhile, Google will cache the website (after URL submission) and the age of the domain would start to count.
