Does Anchor Text Carry Through All 301 Redirects?

301 redirect is a technique through which, a visitor is routed from one webpage to another. 301 redirect is applied in those instances when the data in a webpage is not accessible or the URL of a webpage isn't accessible. Just like any visitor, search engine crawlers too are redirected to another destination from one webpage to another with 301 redirects. In simple terms, 301 redirect tells that a particular webpage has been permanently moved from one destination to another.
The question which the webmasters are concerned time and again is regarding anchor text in such 301 redirects. Does the anchor text carry through all 301 redirects?



In a recent video blog, Matt Cutts said that typically, anchor text does go through with 301 redirect, but Google can’t assure that it happens every time. Google algorithm considers several factors such as link weight, popularity quotient and trust factor before considering the flow of anchor text along with the 301 redirect.

However, in case any webmaster is solely dependent upon 301 redirects for link building, then this isn’t a very encouraging signal. Google might consider such activity as spammy as well. Google typically logs every anchor text detail and redirect information, and if they found that every anchor text associated with a webpage is originated from 301 redirect, then, there certainly is some abnormal activity going on.

Thus, webmasters should always rely on producing great content to attract natural links.
