Are Links In Footer Treated Differently Than Paragraph Links?

Links are considered to be the soul of any SEO related project. More the links from relevant websites and uniform distribution within a web page, more will be the PR or Page Rank and thus eventually higher ranking in search results.

However, if we consider a web page and different links spread across it, how will Google treat the links placed in footer, compared with the links placed in the paragraphs?



Matt Cutts, the famous Google engineer shared some insights into this topic recently. The calculation of PR from earlier days have changed a lot. However, the core relevancy of links in determination of PR hasn't.  Earlier, there used to be uniformity for all links within a web page: links in the text, header, footer, paragraphs were all considered as same and held same weight.

However, with the evolution of Google, this calculation of PR with respect to links has also changed. Now, Google gives more importance and weightage to the links placed in paragraphs as compared to the footer links.

It may be possible that to manipulate the search results, links were placed in the footer as a standard which is repeated in every web page within that website. However, the links which appear in the paragraphs and texts are unique, and always signify unique content.

Thus, the links in the footer has less importance when compared with the links in paragraphs and texts within the web page.
